Business Plan Feedback

A lot of the feedback I received was positive and many of my peers said that the business idea was actually quite a developed and unique one which was refreshing. One thing that was made pretty clear was that I hadn't looked at budgeting and how my business would create an income, this is something I definitely need to work out. I need to have a look into the different forms of funding I could recieve and if it's viable for keeping a business of this type afloat. At the same time I really like the idea of using this form of business to develop other businesses, not solely focusing on corporate videos but covering a lot of marketing, giving young talent the opportunity to show their work whilst also working alongside small businesses. It could create a mutualistic type of work where we aim to create a platform for people to work together in ways which they can constantly leapfrog off of one another. Other things I need to develop is the brand identity, I've intended for it to be a creative business that presents itself like a corporate and serious business.

The Keepers Daughter - Work Experience

On the 19th, 20th and 30th of September 2019 I, alongside other students in my class went to Lowestoft's 'Seagull Theatre' where we worked with a recently formulated theatre company called 'The Keepers Daughter' who were at that time creating their debut piece 'The Hound of The Baskervilles'. We got the amazing opportunity of working alongside them as production assistants, this meant watching the rehearsals and offering our opinion on what the audience might think about specific moments within the piece, we were essentially a test audience.

I decided to participate in this opportunity because I'm interested in Directing and just Theatre Production in general, I wanted to watch how a professional production creates a piece from scratch and then develops it overtime, this was super interesting to see as I got to see that within these types of productions the actors also play a big part in the pieces creation, they often give ideas for what they might do which helps create a theatre piece that they all enjoy.

This placement didn't meet all of my expectations but that doesn't mean that it was a bad experience, I would have preferred if the experience was more hands on and gave us the opportunity to fill in a specific role within the theatre production but that wasn't the case, there was a lot of sitting and watching. I did really enjoy going in and around the theatre and seeing it's history as well as looking at the different departments.

  • I've learnt that there as loads of roles within a theatre company that have to work in harmony for the piece to be presented well to it's audience.
  • I've learnt that the theatre production process can be very long and repetitive but that's all for a reason, practice makes perfect.
  • I've learnt that a director doesn't always take full control of the piece, they rely on their crew to help create the piece.
From all of this experience I feel as though I have a deeper understanding and appreciation for theatre performances as I see just how much work and effort is needed to create a good performance.

Trett Films - Work Experience

22/09/2019 – Frida Kahlo Shoot

I applied to partake in this work experience because it was an opportunity to work with a pair of individuals with similar interests to me and are on a career path that I want to go down. This was my first work experience opportunity which I feel lucky to have been given, I was asked to join Trett Films on one of their shoots as a Production Assistant/Runner. I had the experience to go to RAF West Raynham to one of their large aircraft hangers to help out production on a corporate video for a up and coming theatre company called Red Boot Productions, they commissioned Trett Films to produce a video for there crowdfunding campaign that they are using to set up and build funds for their untitled ‘Frida Kahlo’ project.

The day was very busy, I started off by offering my help in the hair and make-up department, it is something I’d never really tried before. I was asked to assist the Hair and Make-Up Artist who was currently decorating Rebecca Grant’s hair (Rebecca was the commissioner and also on-screen actor) and she needed someone to hold the ribbons whilst she grabbed clips and plaited the hair. This was an interesting experience.

Next, I was asked to take some behind the scenes photos that Trett Films could use on their social media accounts and also use for promotion. This was quite tricky at first as I was asked to use a camera that I didn’t quite know how to use, to no fault of mine it ran out of battery and I was then asked if I could use my phone which worked out really well and through that I got some really nice images.

Other than these two main tasks throughout the day I was also asked to do small jobs around the place, I was asked to help block the light out of the shot, this included pulling sand bags over cracks of light to make sure that the images on camera were as dark as possible. I was asked to grab chairs for the production team as it had been a fairly long day of standing. Then I was asked to man the large spot light and keep it lit over Rebecca for one of the shots, this was quite a physically demanding task but showed me a lot about film production and how physically demanding it could actually be.

This experience met and exceeded my expectations, I had a lot of fun and it just showed me that the career path I wanted to pursue was also one that I had a lot of fun being a part of, it also gave me things that I can carry on into the future. I first of all learnt that how a small production is managed and that in certain cases it’s not a continuously a stressful environment like it’s made out to be. I also learnt that a Runner has a lot of a role and responsibility, they’re quite important to the whole process and they make sure that everything flows efficiently as they do all of the small jobs that would take time away from the production. As well as this I got to see how each role played its part, the difference in directors and producers and why they were important in synergising with each other. All of these are skills I can bring into my own enterprise and are useful on future shoots as I understand that each role has an important part to play in the engine of the production.

05/10/2019 – Norfolk County Council Shoot

Due to how I performed in the previous work experience with Trett Films they asked if I could help out at another shoot with them. I would be performing the same kind of role, helping them out and also taking some photos behind the scenes.

This shoot was a little different from the last, first of all the footage was being televised so there were more rules that the Trett brothers had to follow. We had a much smaller crew for this shoot which meant the production was much quicker than previous. I spent a lot of the time at these shoots trying to get photos of the production process but because I was using a camera I wasn’t necessarily familiar with a lot of the pictures were unusable after the shoot. This shoot showed me how the director role functions properly as I got to see Josh work alongside his cinematographer Matty and they together worked out what kind of shot worked best for the tone that they were trying to show. This was a great opportunity to see how even in a small crew there is still the ability for them to be in distinct roles that have a large part to play.

The main points I learnt was that when there is synergy in a group the production process is much faster so that is something I can take on in future experiences. We worked with young talent on this shoot and it taught me that the phrase ‘never work with kids or animals’ was actually very accurate as compared to older talent there’s a lot more direction needed and a lot more breaks necessary.

It has shown me I definitely need to learn how to use my camera, once I’ve played around with all of the settings and got used to using it I will be able to go to shoots and feel more confident that I’ll get good results.

Freelance Creative Business Plan

Mission Statement:

Our current creative society is evolving and becoming younger and younger, We aim to promote that further and start a wave of young individuals that can make some high quality professional looking corporate videos, journalistic documentaries and short films. The spotlight for older people controlling what we read and watch is over, now it's time for our voice. We want the young people to tell their stories so with our clients we'll aim to show them just how creative the youth are.

The New Stories aim explore the different aspects of media and search for new stories, this will be through small documentaries, podcasts, written pieces and also working alongside small independent businesses to create corporate videos that tell the stories of the company. The aim is to start of as a small set of freelancers and then eventually develop into a multi-media platform that tells the local people all of the local stories.

The idea is to change the tide of professional corporate videos and bring a new style to the market, one that aims to show off how businesses have grown and developed as every business has an origin story.

Vision Statement:

Ambition, Motivation and Experimentation are our main aims, we want to bring young people into to show them how to utilize their ideas whilst also giving them the hands on experience they'll need to work in the industry. We want our clients to see that just because people are young it doesn't mean they lack experience.
