Business Finance (after feedback from peers)

I shared my business plan with a couple of my peers in order to gain some feedback before submission, the feedback I received was all relatively similar and that was to do with how I priced my products within my presentation. I'd priced products at an hourly rate, charging £2.50 per hour for one service. My peers told me that this may be confusing when people purchase a product as they don't have security that the piece has taken that long and other factors. I agreed with this as I would feel like I'm paying an extortionate price if I was paying by the hour as a customer so I instead decided to create fixed prices that would show the product packages value as a whole.

Below is my updated finance chart with fixed prices and some changes to the income created, with fixed prices I could give a product more value and thus yield more of an income. A minor thing like that could've changed the trajectory of the business overall.

Evaluation

For this past year we’ve been tasked to learn more about creative enterprises, the different kinds of enterprise and overall, what working within that industry is like. Using this learning and experience to guide us into formulating our own idea for a creative enterprise. Finding out the nitty gritty details of business that maybe change our perception of how businesses are formulated and ran. We’ve also been urged to get out there and propel ourselves into this industry, to go and gain important work experience that would truly benefit us into going down our chosen career paths. With all of these skills learnt we’d go onto making a short film collating all of our skills.

When this course began my path was very different to the one, I am on now, at the beginning I wanted to become a freelance filmmaker and potentially go into writing or directing. I wanted to get as much work experience in film out there so that I could potentially move on and work in the film industry. My plan for my business was to create a freelance filmmaking company that would eventually become a production company. I partook in paid work experience with accompany called Trett Films and really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot from it. This drove me towards that sort of business type. I don’t feel I necessarily accomplished it but that’s because I took a different pathway as more opportunities arose. Many activities and tasks led to this change; I would still like to get into the film industry but maybe learn some other skills before I go on to do that. Work experience was the key driver for me during this course, everything I learnt on work experience opportunities helped me get the next opportunity, each one springing me onto different things. After these experiences I would note them down and write them up so I can remember for future reference what I was up to and what skills I was gaining from the subject.

When pursuing my creative venture, I did a lot of research into the creative industry in general, I learnt a lot about how much of a core piece it is within our economy and our culture. I learnt a lot about how people’s intellectual property is protected and why it is protected and how those regulations excel and move creativity onwards. Pursuing a film making business I had to do research into safe work practices and looking into regulations that would protect more vulnerable workers such as children within this industry. When creating the short film all these things had to be kept in mind, we had to make sure that everything we were adding or showing had the right permissions to be added or shown. That meant our team would compose original music for the film, we’d write an original script and we’d also gain permissions from local locations to use their premises for our film. One thing learnt was respect for our team members and that we needed more of it, we needed to respect each other’s ideas and remember that filmmaking was meant to be a fun creative process, not a stressful process, I wish we could’ve learnt this earlier within the production as things may have gone a lot more smoothly if that was the case.

How to keep safe within this work practice was a pivotal part of our work, how to get what we wanted whilst protecting all the people working on the film, whether physically or mentally. A lot of research went into health and safety in a physical sense but not some much on keeping each other safe from a mental health point of view. If we’d have investigated teamwork exercises and more ways for us to work and synergise then maybe, we would’ve had a more fulfilling filmmaking experience. Teamwork is the most important thing within the creative industry, pushing each other up. Instead of striving for our own goals to strive for a collective goal. Instead of competing with classmates we should’ve learnt each other’s strengths and weaknesses and adjusted accordingly. It’s really good to keep in mind that you won’t trip over an audio wire but from what this course has shown me it would be far better to ask each other how we were feeling and to discuss ideas in a way where everyone’s ideas are accepted, not an environment where they’re rejected.

As the course progressed my passion for filmmaking fizzled out as it was becoming a lot less fun. I went on to pursue different ways to be creative and what I found was marketing, after the work experience opportunity with a company called Scooterpac I gained a lot of respect for marketing and I really enjoyed finding really creative ways to promote a business. This is what I wanted to do, my venture moved from making films to making marketing material for businesses who maybe couldn’t do the marketing for themselves. At the same time, I explored new ways to tell stories, via writing and weekly sessions of dungeons and dragons with classmates, this experience then leading on to me going onto radio and learning more about that side of media. It has shown me that in this industry, there isn’t one clear path to go down, each one is different but similar and in each one you get to be creative. I’ve learnt that I enjoy creating, however that may be, I enjoy being a creative person. I don’t have a clear direction that I want to go down but I’m pursuing a career as a marketing assistant and seeing what opportunities that brings.

Developing Skills and Designing

Here are some designs and small projects that I've worked on:

First is this poster, created for East Norfolk Sixth Form College as a means for them to promote the Level 4 Creative Enterprise course. The poster is to influence interested individuals to apply for the course.

This is a logo I was asked to create for a podcast called 'We Speak Common'. It is a dungeons and dragons themed podcast so I added some vectors and images to fit with that theme whilst also sticking to an 80s colour style.

This is a student profile template that I designed for the Creative Enterprise social media takeover, I wanted to stick to the colleges brand as that allows me to see how well I can work with different brand schemes. I allowed others in my class to use this as their template if they weren't feeling to creative, many liked the design and used it and made it their own by adding new things to it.

This is a logo I designed and created for another business called CC Productions, they aim to make professional corporate videos and short films so needed a logo that worked well with that.

This is a logo/patch for an online roleplay motorcycle club called the Iron Disciples. They wanted a realistic biker patch that they could use whilst in-game. They gave a specific brief of it  being black and white. They wanted a winged skull as a centerpiece.

This was an online poster created for a Dungeons and Dragons Facebook group who needed game runners (Dungeon Masters) to run online games to help lonely players amidst the COVID-19 Outbreak.

This is the Youtube Cover Art for a channel called Joy and Rosie, two of my friends from school who have recently set up a Youtube channel. They wanted some art that looked professional but still kept the style of the channel. This project in particular involved a lot of back and fourth, sending slightly tweaked images until it was perfect.

Income and Outgoings of my Business

Business Finances - Expenses

Many self-employed businesses are run from home which means that if there wasn't a procedure involved in tackling how those businesses were taxed they'd be taxed in precisely the same way as another business which has to pay for it's premises and other costs which is slightly unfair to those working from home.

If a business is at home then often many business owned thing will be used personally as well, for example someones bedroom could also be their office space when working. It is up to the business owner to divide the usage up and work out how much of it is used by the business and how much it is used personally, if they're using their phone for both business and personal but 20% of the time the calls are personal then around 80% of the bill is a business expense that can be included within the businesses outgoings.

As I will be running my business from the comfort of my home I can claim certain expenses from that. I know that a majority of the time I'll be using my home internet and phone bill for personal use to I've dedicated around 10% of the bill as an expense to my business. As my business grows this may increase but for now it's a deducted cost that allows for the business to pay for whatever is being used by the business.

The types of things that can be claimed as expenses included:

  • Heating
  • Electricity
  • Council Tax
  • Mortgage interest or rent
  • Internet and telephone use

Cultural Policies - Current Events

There are a lot of things happening currently that effect the economy and creative industries massively, the spread of the Coronavirus is causing a large economic crisis which could mean the creative industries take a massive hit. A lot of precautions are being placed for the future but the main problem at the moment is the fear of the public, social media is creating a lot of fake news which is causing a lot of people to avoid social situations, this puts large events and public entertainment companies at a lot of risk. Theatres often rely on plays and revenue from a lot of older patrons, most theatres struggle even with a constant influx of income, many companies like this will suffer as the revenue will be cut and then if the government chooses to shut things down they're at even more risk as the little they have a side will quickly disappear. The recent budget update that the government has released may help things like this but it's likely that a lot of arts companies will suffer from the affects of this outbreak.

Although there will be a lot of situations that are made worse by this virus, one industry that may thrive is the television and online media industry, shows will run as people when in self-isolation will want entertainment, youtube will become a resource for a lot of peoples boredom as they'll want something to do. If self-isolation becomes a realism we'll all be binge watching shows, watching live-streams and vlogs, that industry may boom more than it has before. Shows like 'Critical Role' have a very small crew and equipment so during these times they'll still be able to produce content and more viewers will be available to watch so their income and donations will increase potentially causing them as a small business to boom temporarily.

This outbreak will kill some businesses and revive certain struggling businesses, at the moment it's hard to work out which ones will survive.

Legal Bodies and Regulatory Frameworks

After conducting research and partaking in work experience with a marketing company it has developed my ideas on things I'd need to consider for my business, one thing specifically being the use and regulation of intellectual properties. When assisting in the creation of some corporate videos for my work experience provider Scooterpac I learnt the struggle of getting usable music for corporate videos.

Obviously because of copyright laws I couldn't use music that the company didn't hold the licence for as the song author would be entitled to these things:

As the owner of the work's copyright, they have the sole authority to:
  • copy the music
  • issue, lend or rent copies to the public
  • perform, show or play the music in public
  • communicate the music to the public (i.e. broadcasting it via TV, radio, internet etc.)
Because of the music being owned by another company I couldn't simply just use the music within corporate videos, we decided that if we bought one license at an unlimited use rate we could use it on any of the marketing videos in the future so although the licensing was very expensive we could use it for many things thus making it more cost effective. Instead of paying $19 per video for a different selection of music we paid $49 for unlimited uses which in the long run works out a lot cheaper. To get around the same price with single uses you'd only be able to get three licences for the same price. It means that the business has effectively licensed music that can be used for an infinite amount of videos, for each video the value for money goes up and the overall cost per video reduces massively.

Knowing this I can place it within my own businesses budgetary requirements because if I didn't use an unlimited license I could end up spending way more money than necessary. I also got the opportunity of learning how Scooterpac trademarks their own intellectual property and how important it is to do so, I found out that when you 'trademark' a word you also have to get it registered afterwards which is the difference between a TM mark and an R mark on a specific word, logo or marketing materials. There are also different classes for different trademarks, for example, if I was to trademark a vehicle called the 'SamWagon' I would list it within the trademark vehicles section as I would have no reason to stop a company in the kitchen appliances section who'd also named their cooker a 'SamWagon' as it would be an entirely different product. If a company did try to call their vehicle a 'SamWagon' after my company trademarked I could take legal action and sue them.

After learning this I learnt how essential it is to make sure you've checked item/character and logo/business-names as if not you can end up in a situation where another company who owns the trademark can then themselves take legal action against you.

Voiceover Script for Scooterpac - Skills Development

Whilst partaking work-experience with Scooterpac I have been tasked with making them a couple of troubleshooting videos but before I could do those I needed to create voice-over scripts as a stage of planning, that meant that I would have to learn how to create one that worked. Luckily, they provided me with a template so I could easily start planning for the video.

Business Plan Feedback

A lot of the feedback I received was positive and many of my peers said that the business idea was actually quite a developed and unique one which was refreshing. One thing that was made pretty clear was that I hadn't looked at budgeting and how my business would create an income, this is something I definitely need to work out. I need to have a look into the different forms of funding I could recieve and if it's viable for keeping a business of this type afloat. At the same time I really like the idea of using this form of business to develop other businesses, not solely focusing on corporate videos but covering a lot of marketing, giving young talent the opportunity to show their work whilst also working alongside small businesses. It could create a mutualistic type of work where we aim to create a platform for people to work together in ways which they can constantly leapfrog off of one another. Other things I need to develop is the brand identity, I've intended for it to be a creative business that presents itself like a corporate and serious business.

The Keepers Daughter - Work Experience

On the 19th, 20th and 30th of September 2019 I, alongside other students in my class went to Lowestoft's 'Seagull Theatre' where we worked with a recently formulated theatre company called 'The Keepers Daughter' who were at that time creating their debut piece 'The Hound of The Baskervilles'. We got the amazing opportunity of working alongside them as production assistants, this meant watching the rehearsals and offering our opinion on what the audience might think about specific moments within the piece, we were essentially a test audience.

I decided to participate in this opportunity because I'm interested in Directing and just Theatre Production in general, I wanted to watch how a professional production creates a piece from scratch and then develops it overtime, this was super interesting to see as I got to see that within these types of productions the actors also play a big part in the pieces creation, they often give ideas for what they might do which helps create a theatre piece that they all enjoy.

This placement didn't meet all of my expectations but that doesn't mean that it was a bad experience, I would have preferred if the experience was more hands on and gave us the opportunity to fill in a specific role within the theatre production but that wasn't the case, there was a lot of sitting and watching. I did really enjoy going in and around the theatre and seeing it's history as well as looking at the different departments.

  • I've learnt that there as loads of roles within a theatre company that have to work in harmony for the piece to be presented well to it's audience.
  • I've learnt that the theatre production process can be very long and repetitive but that's all for a reason, practice makes perfect.
  • I've learnt that a director doesn't always take full control of the piece, they rely on their crew to help create the piece.
From all of this experience I feel as though I have a deeper understanding and appreciation for theatre performances as I see just how much work and effort is needed to create a good performance.
